My Client is part of a globally renowned Corporation which employs more than 26,000 people worldwide. They develop, manufacture and sell a unique range of 3D hardware and software inspection systems for the automotive, aerospace, medical and electronic sectors and have a worldwide sales organisation. The operational and technical groups are made up of several development and manufacturing sites located in North America, Europe Asia and the UK.
They are ISO9001:2008 and TickIT 5.5. Certified for the design, manufacture and installation of calibrated CMMs and measuring robots. The UK Engineering group is responsible for the development and manufacture of the coordinate measurement machines (CMM), supporting metrology software and also a new range of robotic CMMs (RCA). The Engineering group can also be involved in joint-development activities with other Group wide development groups.
Working as Technical Author, the role involves working in a small team of engineers and developers to create and maintain user assistance (O&M manuals) for metrology inspection software and hardware. As a member of the Documentation team you will be responsible for the complete user assistance development cycle from design through to testing, maintenance and archiving of completed solutions. The scope could involve working with touch probes, laser scanners, X-rays and computed tomography, manual arms, robots, optical devices, GPS and other technologies.
The user assistance (O&M manuals) is mainly developed with Author-it, but HelpServer, Help and Manual, RoboHelp, Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, graphics packages and other software tools, are also used within the Company. Documentation is output in a variety of formats including pdf, html and chm.
The following key skills are essential in order to satisfy the demands of the role:
Should have experience of working with a content management system (CMS) and structured authoring. Preference will be given to candidates with specific skills in using AuthorIT and creating templates for HTML Help and Word documents.
Ideally experience of designing, developing, testing and maintaining user assistance for software and hardware using Author-it.
Use established design parameters and procedures for the development of user assistance, and develop new designs and procedures according to project requirements and in line with industry developments in user assistance.
Be able to learn to use the applications and equipment being documented.
Communicate effectively with other members of the development team, with management and with internal and external users of the software and be willing to travel between sites in the UK, with occasional overnight stays.
Other useful skills:
Familiarity with software development tools, including Visual Studio, dotNET, bug reporting and source control.
An understanding of xml and use of editors, schemas and transforms.
Some knowledge of other html Help development tools such as RoboHelp, Help-and-Manual, FrontPage etc.
Experience in the use of Translation Memory tools to localise user assistance and the software interface.
Management of freelance translators and student workers involved in the localisation process.
